The term ‘cholesteatoma’, which arose in the 1800s when the lesion was mistakenly diagnosed as a ‘pearly tumour of fat’ due to its macroscopic appearance, is in fact a misnomer. Cholesteatoma is a destructive and expanding growth consisting of keratinizing squamous epithelium in the middle ear and/or mastoid process.
