G factor in physics
WebThe g factor is the ratio between the naive value of the magnetic moment and the actual value. g ≈ 2. Originally people didn't know why this 2 was showing up and put it in by hand. The first person to theoretically "explain" the 2 was Dirac, with his famous Dirac equation. In physics, the Landé g-factor is a particular example of a g-factor, namely for an electron with both spin and orbital angular momenta. It is named after Alfred Landé, who first described it in 1921. In atomic physics, the Landé g-factor is a multiplicative term appearing in the expression for the energy levels of an atom in a weak magnetic field. The quantum states of electrons in atomic orbitals are normally degenerate in energy, with these degenerate states all sharing the same angular m…

WebDec 17, 2024 · The g-factor - also called Landé factor - describes the ratio of the magnetic moment μ of a particle and the total angular momentum J: μ = - gj (e/2me) J. J is the result of the vectorial composition of orbital angular momentum and spin: J = L + S (Figure 1). Figure 1: Coupling of the vectors of spin S and orbital angular momentum L to the ...
